STORY
While Dockton Creek Fine Gardening may be a sprouting young business, Katie's love for the outdoors and plants blossomed years ago. Katie attended the University of New Hampshire and fell in love with forest ecology and dendrology. She obtained her Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science with a focus in Ecosystems from UNH in 2008. As an undergrad, she worked as a laboratory technician in the Soil Microbial Ecology Lab and completed a Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) in the Forest Ecology Lab. Combining her love of science, the outdoors, and writing led to the publication of her first research paper in 2010.
Continuing her education, Katie rejoined the Soil Microbial Ecology Lab at UNH to study how fungal decomposition is affected by climate stressors. She obtained her Master of Science in Natural Resources with a focus in Soil Ecology in 2011 after several more ecology classes, defending her thesis, and teaching undergraduate labs for 2 years.
Katie took the next several years off to enjoy the outdoors while working as a National Park Ranger and traveling North America. A fascination with ecosystems was rekindled after a move to Northern California where Katie worked on an organic CSA farm and took a course in Vegetable Production at College of the Redwoods. Since then, she has been working in the fine gardening/landscaping field and continuing her education daily.
Most recently, Katie obtained a certificate of Landscape Design from the New York Institute of Art and Design in June 2023.
